RockIT Tech News - January 2025

NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE

The RockIT Tech Team is working on to improve our district network infrastructure for next school year.

We are pursuing a District Data Center move that includes running fiber to the new district building.

We are planning a project to completely overhaul our network to replace 56 network switches, increase our wireless access points to 250 in the district, and increase our outdoor wireless access points to 14. This will increase our in-network data from 10Gb to 25Gb.

Additionally, this will more than double our wireless network bandwidth.

UNIFLOW PRINTING ISSUE RESOLVED

Over the past several weeks, you may have encountered an issue where copiers were unable to print documents due to filenames exceeding 256 characters.

This issue typically occurred when printing from Google Drive or Blackboard.

All copiers have been upgraded, and the issue has been resolved.

The user interface appears slightly different, but all functions remain the same.

GOGUARDIAN REPLACING LIGHTSPEED

GoGuardian is replacing Lightspeed as the state-provided Internet Content Management Service.

Lightspeed service will be discontinued at the end of the fiscal year.

We look forward to this new chapter in ensuring student safety in our connected world.

STUDENT PERSONAL DEVICES NOT ALLOWED

In the past, we have been lenient regarding personal devices. Due to recent security risks affecting district-owned devices, student information, and our obligation to comply with CIPA and FERPA regulations, we must now ask students to refrain from bringing personal devices to school.

For staff, while personal device use is not prohibited at this time, we discourage it for similar reasons. Using personal devices on our network poses significant risks, including the potential for data breaches. If you choose to use a personal device, please do so with full awareness of these risks and take all necessary precautions to safeguard sensitive information.
